Songs

 Dear families,

I have a couple of songs that the children have been working on for fun.

The Grade 1s are singing Un Pulpito

Some of the images don't match the vocabulary, so please ask your children what the words mean.  We have gone over the translations so they should be able to answer you.

The Grade 2s have been working on Soy Una Pizza.

Napi and the Rock

The Grades 1-3 kids watched the story of Napi and the Rock.  This was a collaborative performance presented by Making Treaty 7 and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

My treat was to watch the children as they watched and listened to the performance.  I am attaching the video for your enjoyment as well.

Did you every wonder why you had to learn the recorder in Elementary School?

This Week

 Dear Parents/Guardians,

This week in music we began our recorder units with the Grade 4 and 5 students.  It promises to be an exciting music making time.  Not only will we learn to make beautiful ethereal sounds with our recorders but we will also reinforce or learn musical note notation.

The Grade 3s have begun learning a beautiful song called El Caballo Blanco.  Have a listen:

Recorders etc.

 Dear Families,

Next week we will begin our introduction to the recorder with the Grades 4 and 5.  We are all very excited to start this unit.  The Grade 5s already worked on improvising melodies on the xylophones and worked on their concentration skills.  The recorder will be quite a change since we will start from scratch.  Starting from scratch means that we will learn to hold the recorder with the left hand and place our hands in the proper position.  Very exciting!!!

I am attaching a few songs that some of our grades are familiar with.  These should be fun to play in your home:

Listening

One of the most important aspects of learning is knowing how to listen.  The days of homework, where children had the opportunity to review what was learned in the classroom, are pretty much over.  It is very important for families to expect from their children to remember and elaborate on what it is that was learned in the classroom each and every day.

Please ask your child about Pepe Escucha.  I will be using Pepe Escucha as a visual aide to teach the children, the younger ones especially, on the importance of being mindful listeners and listening to learn. With some classes we have already met Pepe with other it will happen next week.

ASK

Ask your child about the Welcome Back Assembly!

This week we began with name games and we already started playing the xylophones with our Grade 5s.  Some of our Grade 3 classes have begun learning my Spanish version of the tongue twister Fuzzy Wuzzy Was a Bear.

Ask you child what activities they have done in the music classroom this week.

I strongly recommend finding English tongue twisters!

Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear

Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair

Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't fuzzy

Was he?
